Best Brand 500GB Hard Drive
ioSafe Solo - 500 GB Fireproof Waterproof External Hard Drive includes $1k Disaster Recovery Service
Product Description:
Like an aircraft black box for your digital data, the ioSafe Solo is the world's first, high capacity, fireproof & waterproof external hard drive. Using a simple USB 2.0 interface, the ioSafe Solo works with your PC or Mac just like any other USB external hard drive. Compatible with almost all backup programs that work with external hard drives. A combination of patented and patent pending ioSafe technologies work to allow for airflow cooling during normal operation yet protect the data from fire and floods. FloSafe vents are open during normal operation. Active cooling is provided by a near silent fan that drives air through the FloSafe vents. During a fire event, the patented FloSafe vents automatically close to prevent extreme outside heat from damaging the hard disk inside the enclosure. DataCast is our proprietary endothermic insulation that vaporizes embedded water molecules during a fire and works hard to protect the inner hard drive from damage even though the outside temperatures spike to over 1500....

Compare online backup to fireproof hard drives
ioSafe Solo hard drive protects backup data from fire and water damage
We've previously looked into some online storage options as secure ways to backup your data. While you can always add more drives to a desktop system for redundancy, none of that does you any good if your whole house burns down or ends up under water. The online solutions offer an off-site way to backup files, but are much, much slower than accessing a local drive. ioSafe has found a nice compromise between the two options with its Solo line of external USB hard drives....

Fireproof Hard Drive Review
ioSafe Fireproof Waterproof Hard Drive
In the past, true fireproof and waterproof computer hard drives were reserved for high end installations. Now these disaster proof drives are available to home consumers.
Using a portable hard drive as a backup device or as a primary computer storage device is a common practice but holds with it one crucial flaw. In order to be a truly safe backup drive the data must be protected from accidental destruction caused by a natural disaster....

External HDD Reviews
ioSafe announces Solo, the external, submersible, fire-proof HDD enclosure
The last time we heard from ioSafe they were taking 2.5-inch HDDs, wrapping them in armor, then stuffing them into 3.5-inch enclosures -- adding fire and water protection in a standard form factor. Now they've given up on the internal route and have gone for something a little larger and more durable, fitting Western Digital or Seagate disks into hardened external USB 2.0 cases capable of being submersed in ten feet of water for three days or surviving a raging inferno for 30 minutes. $199 gets you a 500GB model, but, since you'd probably have a hard time upgrading the drive in there without a jackhammer, we'd recommend going straight for the $349 1.5TB model -- early adopters get a tidy $50 off!

ioSafe Solo drive guards against fire and water
Auburn (CA) - Consumers fleeing from their homes in the wake of flooding waters may not think to grab external hard drives containing important data. The need falls then to have a consumer product which could withstand, at least for a period of time, exposure to extreme elements. That's the idea behind the new ioSafe Solo, which starts around $150....

Data Storage
Hard Drives Designed to Withstand Fire, Flood, Theft
The ioSafe line of hard drives are especially designed to withstand natural disasters and theft. Each is enclosed in a specially designed enclosure and ships with a 3 year disaster assistance warranty from the vendor (5 year protection is optional) in which ioSafe personnel will assist in the recovery of data from the drive as well as, if necessary, provide a replacement drive with the restored data; potentially paying up to $20,000 for the recovery of data from the drive (depending on drive model; see vendor for warranty details). The vendor does not, of course, guarantee the recoverability of the data itself; and the warranty covers only one "disaster recovery event" for each drive purchased....

Will it Blend? 1.5 TB Hard Drive
Video: ioSafe Solo Fire/Flood Hard Disk Test Puts "Will It Blend?" To Shame
I was taken to a Vegas house off the strip. There's a fluorescent green pool, a purple jacuzzi. No strippers in sight -- it was time to set a fireproof hard disk aflame.
I was being shown the ioSafe Solo, a fireproof and floodproof external hard drive that's the first consumer product from a company that's only done industrial and government stuff previously. They threw it in said green pool (sadly sans strippers, and sadly not a pool of champagne). Then they put it in a gas burner, cranking it up to 1600+ degrees F....

ioSafe Solo: Disaster-proof external hard drive
Copying data to an external hard drive is probably the easiest, most popular way to back-up. This won't help save important data against fire or flood, however, unless the external hard drive is the one unveiled by ioSafe at CES this year: the ioSafe Solo.
ioSafe is known for making internal hard drives that can survive extreme heat. The ioSafe Solo is the result of putting that internal hard drive into an external case that features a USB 2.0 connection to hook up to a computer....

IoSafe Solo, the Unbreakable, Water and Fire-Proof External Hard Drive
Although in our ultra-connected and networked world, most threats (in other words, hackers) to the security of one's data are rather "virtual," there are also certain situations when external storage solutions (typically used for backup operations) can easily break down pretty much at the same time as computers get hit by a disaster (fire, flood, etc.) However, that's not at all the case with the specific device you're about to see as follows, namely the ioSafe Solo, developed by the ioSafe company, a USB HDD that might very well go through Armageddon without suffering any serious damage.

Compare ioSafe vs Sentry Safe
New ioSafe Fireproof, Waterproof Hard Drive: Ready for Battle!
The ioSafe Solo hard drive, strutting its stuff at CES last week, is ready to combat your greatest fears. Known for making disaster hardy equipment, ioSafe has added this 7kg (15 lb.) behemoth to its lineup. Similar to this model from Sentry, the ioSafe:Solo can store up to 1.5TB of your most valuable data and survive 30 minutes of flame or up to 3 days of immersion in water without skipping a byte. Set this huge guy on the floor though because there's no mention of whether it's shockproof at all. They incorporate multiple active and passive systems to ablate heat and water damage which hopefully don't require power to operate....

Fireproof Hard Drive
ioSafe Solo: Could I interest you in a fire-proof hard drive
People concerned with the security of digital information generally assume that data loss will happen electronically, either by accident or by targeted attack. That's a pretty good assumption, but data loss can occur for other reasons as well, being in a fire for example. I say that as a retired volunteer firefighter who has seen first hand what fire, heat, and water do to electronic equipment.
Fireproof and waterproof data storage
It's hard to believe that something could be fire and waterproof at the same time, certainly not sensitive data storage devices like a hard drive. It appears that I need to start believing, as ioSafe has figured out how to make affordable external hard-drives that are:...

Customer Review
Hands On: ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive with Disaster Protection
Today, I am taking a look at the ioSafe Solo external hard drive. This is single drive USB connected device that
looks more like my Sans Digital DAS unit, size-wise, than a single drive external package.
ioSafe-Solo-front
And it weighs a lot more. 15 pounds to be exact. Why is that? According to ioSafe:
The ioSafe Solo was developed to provide protection where data is most vulnerable. Home users and businesses
often leave valuable and irreplaceable information exposed to natural disaster because of what was the expense
and time consideration of implementing a disaster recovery solution. The ioSafe Solo changes all of that!
Quite simply, the reason why this device is rather large and heavy is that it is built to protect your precious data
in the event of a disaster, whether from a fire or flood. The ioSafe Solo is rated to protect the contents from fire up
to 1550°F and submersion in fresh or salt water up to 3 days at depths to 10 feet. I can visualize 10 feet of water,
but is 1550°F enough for a fire in your home? According to the Oklahoma State Department of Heath, "In only
3 1/2 minutes, the heat from a house fire can reach over 1100 degrees Fahrenheit." This seems like a comfortable
amount of headroom for the temperatures generated from a fire....

ioSafe Solo USE External Hard Drive with Disaster Protection
Now here's an interesting product. ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive, Fireproof Waterproof Rugged USB in 500 Gb, 1 Tb or 1.5 Tb capacities.
Note however that the fire rating is only 1/2 hour at 1500 F. While this is probably quite adequate for most disasters if the fire is real bad this won't be sufficient. Or the proverbial tornado, etc. You will still need offsite backup.
That said I'd put this device in it's own closet with fire resistant drywall on all the walls and ceiling as well as a steel fire door. And a sprinkler.
My job description today is paranoid pessimist....

Air cooled disk drive
Hard Drive Reliability with FloSafe™ technology from ioSafe external hard drives and NAS Storage Server Systems
What do you get when you combine heat generating hard drives inside a 1700°F capable, sealed fireproof safe? An oven!
The Achilles heel for computer backup drives is cooling. As hard drive electronics get faster and hard drive disks spin faster, the heat generated increases. Even with a very small amount of energy, the inside volume can get incredibly hot. Every ioSafe data storage product, through an ingenious engineering design, has overcome this problem.

ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive
The ioSafe Solo external hard drive is one tough cookie that is touted to withstand not only extreme heat but pressure and cold as well. The hard drive was actually engulfed in flames at CES, and sleeps with the fishes comfortably when submerged up to 10 feet for 24 hours without springing a leak. This is something we won't mind having, but is it really that practical? After all, how many of us have actually dropped our hard drives down the toilet bowl, or swimming pool, for that matter? In the case of a fire, the ioSafe Solo certainly shines, although one could also keep the hard drive in a fireproof safe instead (but that's less practical)....

Hard Drive Review
ioSafe Solo Review: The World's Best External Hard Drive
Like bikinis and speedos, external hard drives have gradually become smaller and cuter over the years (scratchArmor that ... speedos are never cute ... especially small speedos!). But there are times when appearance should be secondary to functionality - and external hard drives are such a case. Would you prefer your critical data to be backed up to something that's small, sleek and shiny but which offers no real security at all? Or would you prefer it to be protected by a suit of armor?...

External Hard Drive for Mac
Don't Let Your Creative Work Get Cremated!
As a creative, my work is naturally an important and functional aspect of myself, an extension of myself, a meaningful facet of my total personality and emotional well-being. Okay, you guessed it: I am a Mac user. As such, I do a lot of "artistic" work and creative design. Now, realize I am not discounting other creative jobs like coding and accounting. I am just stating that colors, shapes and smart blurs are sometimes a little less than quantifiable sometimes. As such, I could not imagine losing the massive array of work I have done over even the last year.
Who could?
Unlike flat copy or photographs, accounting spreads or sketchbooks, digital artwork of any kind is always susceptible to corruption, compatibility and destruction - very similar to government. That is why I have found the perfect tool; not only effective, but an aesthetic sister to your little white world (or silver if you're a Macbook Pro user!).
Introducing the ioSafe Solo. Fifteen pounds of pure data protection coupled with USB functionality makes the Solo a sure bet when it comes to unpacking it and plugging it right in. You're good to go. Starting at $149.99 for the 500 GB hard drive, even the proverbial "starving artist" can afford to save his precious portfolio, forgoing the time-honored "freelance diet." For those of you new to this term, it is a manor of diet consisting mainly of not eating because you lack the funds....
